Eduardo Rodriguez pitched seven solid innings to tie for the major league lead with his fourth victory of the season as the Boston Red Sox defeated the visiting Seattle Mariners 5-3 to earn a split of the four-game series at Fenway Park.
Rodriguez (4-0) overcame a shaky opening inning and allowed three runs on six hits. The left-hander didn't walk a batter and struck out eight.
Boston's Adam Ottavino pitched a scoreless eighth and fellow right-hander Matt Barnes worked a 1-2-3 ninth for his fourth save of the season.
J.D. Martinez went 2-for-3 with two doubles for the Red Sox.
Mariners left-hander Nick Margevicius (0-2) lasted just one-third of an inning. He gave up four runs on two hits with four walks and one strikeout.
The Mariners took an early lead as Mitch Haniger and Ty France led off with doubles to left field, making it 1-0. Kyle Seager flied out to right field to advance France to third, but he was stranded there as Rodriguez got Kyle Lewis to pop out to second and Evan White to strike out.
The Red Sox scored four times in the bottom of the inning.
Enrique Hernandez led off with a single, and walks to Rafael Devers and Martinez loaded the bases. With one out, Christian Vazquez lined a run-scoring single to right. Margevicius then walked Hunter Renfroe and Marwin Gonzalez to bring in two more runs with the bases remaining loaded.
Right-hander Drew Steckenrider replaced Margevicius but hit Christian Arroyo with a pitch to make it 4-1.
The Red Sox added a run in the second as Hernandez and Devers led off with walks and Xander Bogaerts hit a one-out double to left. Hernandez scored on the play, but Devers was thrown out at the plate.
The Mariners got within 5-3 with two runs in the fifth. Sam Haggerty led off with a single and Tom Murphy hit a run-scoring double to left. J.P. Crawford followed with a double to right to score Murphy.
