Jacob deGrom set his career high with 14 strikeouts and also slugged a solo home run as the New York Mets defeated the host Miami Marlins 6-4 on Wednesday night.

Miami rallied in the bottom of the ninth, scoring four runs against New York's bullpen. But after RBI doubles by Martin Prado and Rosell Herrera, a run-scoring groundout from Lewis Brinson and Miguel Rojas' RBI single, closer Edwin Diaz came in for one batter and earned the save by retiring Curtis Granderson on a flyout with the tying runner on first.

DeGrom (2-0), the reigning National League Cy Young Award winner, pitched seven scoreless innings, allowing just three hits and walking one. He struck out the final four batters he faced, including all three in the seventh inning, and tossed 114 pitches.

The Marlins never got a runner past second base against deGrom.

For the season, deGrom has pitched 13 innings and allowed no runs with 24 strikeouts. He also extended his scoreless-innings streak to 26 dating to last season and tied Bob Gibson's major-league record with 26 consecutive quality starts (at least six innings with three or less earned runs).

DeGrom's home run was the second of his career and his first since 2017, when he took Joe Ross of the Washington Nationals deep.

Rookie first baseman Pete Alonso joined deGrom as New York's other hitting star on Wednesday. Alonso hit an RBI double that nearly went yard and also singled and scored.

The Mets have won their first two series, both on the road, including a three-game sweep of the Marlins.

Trevor Richards (0-1) took the loss, allowing five hits, three walks and three runs in six innings, striking out seven.

New York opened the scoring in the second inning. Keon Broxton hit a two-out single and scored on Amed Rosario's triple off the bottom of the fence in right-center.

The Mets stretched their lead to 3-0 in the third. DeGrom pulled his homer to right, jumping on a first-pitch 90-mph fastball. The blast had a 102-mph exit velocity and carried into the bullpen in right.

Brandon Nimmo kept the rally going by drawing a 3-2 walk and scoring on Alonso's double that hit the top of the fence in left, missing a home run by inches. Alonso, like deGrom, ambushed the first pitch.

New York made it 4-0 in the seventh. Alonso hit a line-drive, two-out single off the top of third baseman Brian Anderson's glove. The next batter, Robinson Cano, sliced an opposite-field double to left, and Alonso scored standing up.

The Mets added a pair of runs in the eighth on pinch-hit RBI singles by Dominic Smith and Wilson Ramos.
