Padres 3, Giants 2: Andrew Cashner allowed two runs over eight-plus innings as host San Diego defeated San Francisco for the second straight night.

Rene Rivera stroked a two-run double and Cashner recorded two of the six hits for the Padres, who won for the fifth time in six games. Cashner (5-7) struck out seven and took a two-hit shutout into the ninth but was pulled after allowing Hunter Pence’s homer and Joe Panik’s single.

Giants starter Yusmeiro Petit (5-5) gave up three runs (two earned) and four hits in 5 1/3 innings. The loss was the fifth in seven games for San Francisco, which remained 3 1/2 games behind the first-place Los Angeles Dodgers in the National League West.

Buster Posey notched the only two hits over the first eight innings against Cashner, who retired 15 consecutive batters before faltering in the ninth. Gregor Blanco delivered a two-out, run-scoring single off Kevin Quackenbush in the ninth to make it a one-run game before the reliever induced Brandon Crawford to fly to left field to record his fifth save.

San Diego struck for a run in the third inning, when a throwing error by Giants second baseman Panik allowed Will Venable to score. Yasmani Grandal doubled in the sixth and Seth Smith was walked intentionally before Rivera smacked a double to center to score both runners.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Giants CF Angel Pagan (back) sat out and also is likely to miss Sunday’s game. … San Diego LF Abraham Almonte (ankle) departed after hitting a double in the third inning. … Pence’s homer was his 20th of the season but first since Sept. 1.
