Yankees 6, Blue Jays 3: Jacoby Ellsbury belted a two-run homer to cap a five-run seventh inning as visiting New York won the opener of the three-game series.

Chase Headley also homered, Brett Gardner added an RBI double and Martin Prado matched Ellsbury with two hits to help the Yankees remain within three games of the American League's second wild card. Chris Capuano (2-3) allowed three runs - two earned - over 6 1/3 innings to earn his first win in seven starts since joining New York.

Left-hander Mark Buehrle (11-9) lost his 11th consecutive decision to the Yankees and fell to 1-13 lifetime against them, giving up four runs on seven hits in six-plus innings. José Bautista homered for the third straight game, Dioner Navarro added three hits and Kevin Pillar had an RBI double among two hits for Toronto, which fell to 7-17 in August to drop 6 1/2 games back in the wild card chase.

With the Yankees trailing 1-0, Brian McCann doubled to lead off the seventh, Carlos Beltran walked and Gardner doubled to right to plate McCann before Beltran came home when Steve Tolleson's relay throw sailed over third base. Gardner scampered home on an errant pickoff attempt by Navarro and Ellsbury followed by lining a bullet off reliever Aaron Loup that just cleared the wall in right for a 5-1 edge.

The Blue Jays threatened in the bottom of the inning when Pillar doubled home Colby Rasmus and Jose Reyes reached on an error, bringing on reliever Adam Warren, who surrendered a sacrifice fly to Melky Cabrera to cut the deficit to 5-3. Closer David Robertson got the final four outs to earn his 35th save in 38 chances.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Yankees RHP Masahiro Tanaka suffered a setback in his rehab from a partially torn ligament in his pitching elbow and will fly back to New York on Saturday after experiencing "general soreness" in the arm. ... Buehrle's 16-start drought versus the Yankees, dating to April 2004, is the second-longest in history against them, trailing only Slim Harriss, who was winless in 19 in a row against New York from 1920-25. ... The Yankees designated LHP Rich Hill for assignment to clear a space for LHP Josh Outman, who allowed an eighth-inning single one day after he was acquired from Cleveland on Thursday for a player to be named or cash considerations.
