Brewers 5, Cardinals 1: Wily Peralta worked 6 1/3 strong innings and Carlos Gomez doubled in a run and scored as Milwaukee topped visiting St. Louis to avoid a three-game sweep.

Jonathan Lucroy drove in two runs and Aramis Ramirez went 3-for-4 with an RBI single for the Brewers. Peralta (2-0) allowed a run and six hits while striking out three to push his streak of starts surrendering two earned runs or fewer to begin the season to three.

Joe Kelly (1-1) started for the Cardinals and allowed an unearned run on three hits in four innings before he pulled up with a tight left hamstring trying to run out a bunt in the fifth. Allen Craig provided St. Louis’ lone run with a home run in the sixth.

Logan Schafer reached on an error by Cardinals first baseman Matt Adams leading off the third and moved up on Peralta’s sacrifice before coming around to score when Gomez sent a double to right-center. St. Louis’ defense let it down again in the fifth when right-hander Seth Maness got the first two outs before Peralta reached on Matt Holliday’s error in left.

Maness walked Gomez and Jean Segura reached on an infield single to load the bases before Lucroy sent a two-run single to right and Ramirez followed with his RBI single to left. Craig got the Cardinals on the board in the sixth by sending a first-pitch fastball out to right for his first homer of the season but Milwaukee got that back on a bases-loaded walk in the eighth.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Craig has hit safely in five straight games after going 1-for-22 over his previous six contests. … Brewers RHP Tyler Thornburg worked a perfect inning of relief - his fifth straight appearance without allowing a hit or a walk. … Milwaukee is 6-0 on the road and begins a four-game series at Pittsburgh on Thursday while the Cardinals head to Washington to continue their 11-game trip.
