Mariners 10, Angels 3: Felix Hernandez struck out 11 in six innings, Abraham Almonte doubled home the tiebreaking run and Justin Smoak drilled a three-run homer as visiting Seattle trounced Los Angeles.
Hernandez (1-0) allowed three runs (two earned) and four hits while outdueling Angels ace Jered Weaver. Dustin Ackley added a three-run triple and four relievers combined for three scoreless innings as the Mariners prevailed in Lloyd McClendon’s managerial debut.
Weaver (0-1) was charged with four runs (three earned) and six hits in 6 1/3 innings. Mike Trout hit a two-run homer in his first at-bat while going 2-for-4 in his first regular-season game since signing a six-year contract worth $144.5 million.
Weaver took a 3-2 lead into the seventh before Ackley singled with one out and Mike Zunino ended the right-hander's night by hitting a tying triple off the left-field fence. Almonte doubled to left-center field off Fernando Salas to give Seattle a one-run lead, Smoak belted a shot to right in the ninth off Kevin Jepsen to make it 7-3 and Ackley added a three-run triple later in the inning.
Trout smacked his two-run homer in the first inning and Pujols delivered a run-scoring double in the third to give the Angels a 3-1 lead. Kyle Seager doubled in Smoak in the sixth, but Logan Morrison was cut down at the plate to keep Los Angeles ahead.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Seattle 2B Robinson Cano went 2-for-4 and scored a run in his debut after signing a 10-year, $240 million contract as a free agent. … Angels hitting coach Don Baylor broke a bone in his right leg while attempting to catch the ceremonial first pitch thrown by former Los Angeles star Vladimir Guerrero and will undergo surgery on Tuesday. Guerrero signed a one-day contract with the Angels on Monday and announced his retirement. … Zunino and Ackley are the first Mariners’ players to triple on Opening Day since Spike Owen in 1986.
