Padres 10, Marlins 1: Jedd Gyorko belted his second career grand slam and added a two-run homer while Tyson Ross pitched seven strong innings as San Diego rolled over visiting Miami.
Gyorko finished with three hits and a career-best six RBI while Seth Smith drove in two runs and finished a homer shy of the cycle as the Padres produced their season-best run total. Ross (4-3) threw 111 pitches, allowing one run and four hits while striking out eight en route to his fourth win in five decisions.
Marcell Ozuna hit a solo homer and Giancarlo Stanton recorded a sixth-inning single for the Marlins to extend his hitting streak to 11 games. Jose Fernandez (4-2) struggled through five-plus innings, yielding six runs (five earned) on six hits while striking out five.
Yasmani Grandal reached on a throwing error by first baseman Garrett Jones in the second inning and trotted home on Gyorko’s homer to right field for a 2-0 lead. Ross stranded three runners in the first two innings but retired the Marlins in order in both the fourth and fifth frames.
Everth Cabrera and Smith singled and Grandal walked to open the sixth before Gyorko hammered a 2-0 pitch from Fernandez deep into the left-field seats for a 6-0 advantage. The Padres sent 11 in all to the plate in the inning and added runs on an RBI single by Alexi Amarista and Will Venable's sacrifice fly.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Gyorko has hit four of his five blasts this season in the last seven contests and notched his second career multi-homer performance. The other occurred on Aug. 23, 2013 against the Chicago Cubs. … Fernandez is 12-0 at home in his career and 4-8 on the road. … The Padres are expected to activate 3B Chase Headley (right calf strain) from the disabled list for Saturday’s game.
