Astros 6, Tigers 2: Matt DomÃnguez hit a two-run homer while rookie George Springer and Carlos Corporan added solo blasts as visiting Houston averted a four-game sweep by snapping Detroit's eight-game winning streak.
Jose Altuve drove in the tying and go-ahead runs with a two-run double and L.J. Hoes went 3-for-3 as the Astros halted a five-game skid. Dallas Keuchel (3-2) allowed two runs and struck out seven in a season-high 7 2/3 innings to outduel former University of Arkansas teammate Drew Smyly.
Victor Martinez homered among his three hits to extend his hitting streak to 11 games and Nick Castellanos had an RBI double for the Tigers, who lost for only the second time in the last 11 meetings with Houston. Smyly (2-2) gave up three runs on five hits in 5 1/3 innings.
Castellanos' two-out double in the second and Martinez's solo shot in the fourth put the Tigers ahead 2-0. Houston answered with three in the fifth on Springer's first career blast and Altuve's two-out, two-run double to take its first lead of the series.
Corporan doubled the lead in the seventh, hammering a 96 mph fastball from reliever Evan Reed into the seats in right field and Keuchel protected the two-run advantage by escaping a two-on, one-out jam in the bottom of the frame. Keuchel exited after giving up a two-out single in the eighth but reliever Anthony Bass retired the dangerous Miguel Cabrera before Dominguez belted a towering two-run homer off Justin Miller in the ninth.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Springer, playing in his 20th career game, finished the series 6-for-14 and pushed his hitting streak to eight games. ... Martinez is batting .405 (17-for-42) with 12 RBIs during an 11-game hitting streak. ... Astros RHP Scott Feldman will be activated from the 15-day disabled list and start Friday's opener of a three-game series at Baltimore while Detroit sends RHP Justin Verlander to the hill as it continues a seven-game homestand against Minnesota on Friday.
