Porcello (2-1) limited the Angels to one run on five hits and struck out four and two relievers bridged the gap to Joe Nathan, who struck out two in the ninth for his third save. Torii Hunter and Andrew Romine each had two hits and Nick Castellanos knocked in the tiebreaking run for the Tigers.

Angels starter Hector Santiago (0-3) struck out seven and allowed only two hits over 5 2/3 innings, but he was hurt by five walks and the four errors which led to two unearned runs. Howie Kendrick had three of Los Angeles' seven hits and drove in the Angels' only run.

The Angels struck first on Kendrick's RBI single in the first, but they gave it back on a wild play in the bottom of the frame. Ian Kinsler broke for second on what ended up being ball four to Miguel Cabrera, but catcher Hank Conger's throw sailed into center field, where Mike Trout scooped it up and missed his cutoff man to allow Kinsler to score before Santiago threw wildly to the plate, allowing Cabrera to take second.

Another Conger miscue led to the go-ahead run in the sixth, as the Angels catcher tried to throw behind Austin Jackson at first but the throw bounced away from Albert Pujols and Jackson scooted to second. Castellanos followed with a single up the middle against Kevin Jepsen to score Jackson.
