Evan Gattis hit a pair of doubles and scored a run while Tommy La Stella added an RBI for the Braves, who have won four of their last six contests - including Tuesday's opener of the three-game set. Wood (6-6) scattered three hits and a walk over seven innings, striking out four in his first start since May 7.
Dexter Fowler and Jon Singleton each recorded a double for the Astros, who have lost four straight games and eight of nine. McHugh (4-6) suffered his third consecutive loss despite yielding only three runs and three hits while striking out nine in seven frames.
Atlanta pushed across its first run in the second inning. Gattis led off with a double and moved to third on a groundout before scoring on Upton's sacrifice fly to right field.
The Braves did not record their second hit until the sixth but made their third count an inning later. Jason Heyward was hit by a pitch with one out and Upton deposited a 3-1 offering over the wall in center field for his 16th blast and a 3-0 lead.
