Cardinals 8, Giants 0: Shelby Miller threw seven shutout innings and host St. Louis won the opener of the day-night doubleheader.
Miller (6-3) allowed six hits and struck out seven while lowering his ERA to 1.82. Daniel Descalso and Tony Cruz each had two hits and two RBIs for the Cardinals, who completed a sweep with a 7-1 win in the nightcap.
Giants starter Matt Cain (4-3) was tagged for seven runs and nine hits in six innings. Brandon Crawford had three of San Francisco's seven hits.
The Cardinals did most of their damage in the third inning, sending 12 batters to the plate and scoring seven runs. Matt Carpenter and Jon Jay had one-out RBI singles to give St. Louis a 2-0 lead.
After Matt Holliday struck out, the Cardinals followed with run-scoring singles from Allen Craig and Matt Adams before Cruz doubled in two runs. Descalso finished off the surge with another RBI single off Cain, who retired the side in order in his other five innings.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Miller and Cain combined for 16 strikeouts in 13 innings. … Giants OF Angel Pagan missed his sixth straight game with a hamstring injury but could return for the second game of the doubleheader. … Giants 3B Pablo Sandoval missed the game with a left foot strain. He could be out up to a week with the injury.
