Yankees 6, Rays 2: Zoilo Almonte belted his first career home run among three hits to back a solid outing by David Phelps as host New York evened the series with Tampa Bay.

Robinson Cano, Ichiro Suzuki, David Adams and Lyle Overbay each added an RBI for the Yankees, who won for the third time in their last 10 games. Phelps (5-4) lasted 5 2/3 innings and was charged with two runs on eight hits.

Roberto Hernandez (4-8) yielded five runs on nine hits in seven innings while Ben Zobrist and Luke Scott each drove in a run for the Rays.

Tampa Bay knotted it at 2-2 on Scott’s RBI single in the fourth but New York broke through in the bottom of the frame. The Yankees loaded the bases on three straight singles before a double play brought in the go-ahead run and Adams’ single capped the two-run frame.

Almonte, who singled for his first career hit in Thursday’s series opener, singled in the second and fourth before coming up with the bases empty in the sixth. The rookie blasted an 0-1 sinker into the New York bullpen in right-center to give the Yankees a 5-2 lead.
