Yankees 2, Mariners 1: Chris Stewart delivered the tiebreaking single with two out in the ninth as New York beat host Seattle for its third win in the four-game series.
Ichiro Suzuki walked against Yoervis Medina (1-2) to start the ninth and was sacrificed to second before easily beating the throw of Raul Ibanez on Stewart’s ground single to left. The win was the sixth in seven games for the Yankees while the Mariners have lost six of their last nine.
David Robertson (4-1) struck out two in the eighth inning for his 17th consecutive scoreless appearance against Seattle and Mariano Rivera allowed two hits in the ninth before retiring Michael Saunders on a first-pitch fly to left for his 23th save in 24 opportunities and 37th of his career against the Mariners.
Seattle ace Felix Hernandez struck out seven and allowed one run and five hits in seven innings. New York’s David Phelps matched Hernandez by allowing one run and three hits in six innings while striking out six.
The Yankees took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second on Brett Gardner’s single. The Mariners tied the contest in the bottom of the inning on Brendan Ryan’s single.
