Rays 4, Twins 3: Luke Scott and Evan Longoria hit back-to-back solo homers to snap a tie in the sixth inning and Matt Moore won his 13th game as host Tampa Bay extended its season-high win streak to eight.
Rookie Wil Myers added three hits and two RBIs for the Rays, who have won nine straight over Minnesota after completing the four-game sweep. Moore (13-3) retired the first 11 batters he faced and gave up three runs on three hits - striking out 10 - to set a club record for wins before the All-Star break.
Joe Mauer’s two-out, two-run single in the eighth off Alex Torres pulled the Twins within 4-3 before Joel Peralta struck out Trevor Plouffe to end the inning with two on base. Jake McGee struck out two in a perfect ninth inning for his first career save as the Rays won for the 12th time in 13 games.
Sean Rodriguez singled, moved to second on an infield hit by Matt Joyce and scored on Myers’ RBI single to left field to give the Rays a 1-0 lead in the third. Brian Dozier doubled with two outs in the sixth to end Moore’s no-hit bid and came home on Jamey Carroll’s RBI single up the middle to tie the game at 1-1.
Scott answered with one out in the bottom of the sixth, hammering an 0-2 pitch from Minnesota starter Mike Pelfrey (4-7) out to right field for his seventh blast. Two pitches later, Longoria belted his first homer in 15 games and the team-leading 18th over the left field wall.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Moore, who was named to the AL All-Star team Thursday as a replacement for Texas' Yu Darvish, had his streak of scoreless innings stopped at 22 1/3 – a career high and the fourth-longest in club history. … Twins LHP Caleb Thielbar was placed on the bereavement list after the passing of his grandmother. RHP Michael Tonkin was recalled from Triple-A Rochester to replace Thielbar on the roster and retired all four batters he faced in his major-league debut. … Pelfrey gave up three runs on eight hits over six innings and has one victory in his last nine outings.
