Marlins 8, Mets 1: Jose Fernandez struck out eight in seven scoreless innings and added an RBI single among two hits as Miami clinched a series win over visiting New York.
Derek Dietrich and Chris Coghlan each drove in two runs and scored one and Adeiny Hechavarria recorded a pair of RBIs for the Marlins, who have taken the first two games of the series by a combined 13-2.
Fernandez (3-3) needed only 87 pitches to match his season high in innings while walking one and yielding three hits. The rookie right-hander has allowed the Mets a total of nine hits while striking out 20 in three starts.
Coghlan sent a two-out single up the middle with two outs in the first to plate the first run for Miami. Fernandez lined a single into the gap in left-center in the second that chased Jeff Mathis all the way home from first to make it 2-0.
Mathis delivered his second career triple to cap a two-run rally in the fourth off Collin McHugh (0-1), and the Marlins broke things open in the seventh with four more. Dietrich delivered the big hit with a two-run single and Coghlan and Hechavarria each added an RBI in the frame.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Miami will attempt to match a season high with three straight wins Sunday against Mets phenom Matt Harvey. … McHugh made the spot start for New York and was knocked around for four runs and six hits while walking three in four innings. … Omar Quintanilla was the only player to post multiple hits for New York with a 2-for-3 effort. He is 4-for-7 in the series.
