Rays 3, Tigers 1: Jose Lobaton went 3-for-3 with two RBIs and Jeremy Hellickson pitched six-plus innings as host Tampa Bay defeated Detroit to win the three-game series.
Lobaton singled in runs in the second and fourth innings and Hellickson (7-3) allowed one run and six hits to improve to 5-1 in six June starts. Fernando Rodney worked the ninth for his 17th save in 22 opportunities.
Miguel Cabrera homered into the tank beyond the right-center field fence in the fourth inning for Detroit’s lone run. Cabrera is the second player to hit a ball into the tank – the other was Luis Gonzalez of the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2007.
Cabrera’s homer tied the score at 1-1 and Lobaton’s bases-loaded single off Rick Porcello (4-6) gave the Rays the lead for good before Yunel Escobar followed by drawing a walk. Porcello allowed three runs and eight hits in six innings.
Detroit loaded the bases in the seventh against Hellickson before Jake McGee entered the retired the next three batters to protect the two-run lead. The loss dropped the Tigers into a first-place tie with Cleveland in the American League Central.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Cabrera extended his hitting streak to 15 games and went 6-for-12 with three homers in the three-game series. … Rays 3B Evan Longoria (foot) missed his second consecutive contest. … Both benches were warned after Porcello plunked Ben Zobrist in the back in the first inning. The tension stemmed from Cabrera’s unhappiness with Rodney throwing a high and tight pitch in Saturday’s contest.
