Rays 4, Tigers 3 (10): Yunel Escobar drove in pinch runner Sam Fuld from third base with a two-out single in the bottom of the 10th inning as host Tampa Bay rallied to beat Detroit.
After two hits and a wild pitch, Escobar drilled an offering from losing pitcher Bruce Rondon (0-1) over center fielder Austin Jackson’s head as the Rays evened the three-game series at one win apiece. James Loney had a one-out single in the 10th for his third hit, Ben Zobrist also had three hits and Fernando Rodney (3-2) pitched two scoreless innings to earn the victory.
Victor Martinez collected three hits, Jhonny Peralta knocked in a pair of runs and Jackson also belted a solo homer for the Tigers. Detroit starter Justin Verlander gave up three runs (two earned) and nine hits over eight innings.
Jackson hit the second pitch of the third into the right-field seats and Peralta added a two-out, two-run single later in the inning for a 3-0 lead. The Rays responded in the bottom of the frame when Desmond Jennings tripled and scored on Zobrist’s groundout.
Matt Joyce reached on an error, moved to third on Zobrist’s base hit and trotted home on Loney’s RBI single that pulled Tampa Bay within 3-2 in the fifth. Verlander got out of a jam in the seventh by getting Loney to ground into a double play, but Luke Scott tied the game with a one-out solo blast to right field in the eighth.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Tampa Bay 3B Evan Longoria was held out of the lineup with an irritation to the plantar fasciitis in his right foot and is day-to-day. …Tigers 3B Miguel Cabrera extended his hitting streak to 14 games with a single in the third inning. … Rays starter Chris Archer gave up three runs and five hits over five innings with three strikeouts and three walks.
