Astros 3, Indians 2: J.D. Martinez and Rick Ankiel hit back-to-back homers in the second inning and host Houston made the lead stand up in the opener of the three-game series.
Lucas Harrell (1-2) allowed two earned runs while working around five hits and five walks in 5 2/3 innings. Wesley Wright, Hector Ambriz and Jose Veras worked 3 1/3 innings of scoreless relief with Veras picking up his first save.
The Astros scored their first two runs of the second inning on a homer by Martinez that followed Carlos Pena’s one-out walk. Ankiel stepped up and hit a 3-2 pitch from Cleveland starter Brett Myers (0-3) over the right-field wall for a 3-0 lead.
The Indians put two runners on base in the first and third innings but couldn’t capitalize. Mark Reynolds walked with two outs in the fourth and came home on Lonnie Chisenhall’s two-run blast to right to cut the deficit to 3-2.
After walking two more batters in the fifth and allowing a two-out single to Reynolds in the sixth, his second of the game, Harrell was lifted. Myers, who played for the Astros from 2009-11, pitched five innings, allowing three runs and five hits.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Martinez left the game in the fourth inning after spraining his right knee during his second at-bat. He was replaced in left field by Brandon Barnes, who had two singles in three at-bats … Myers has allowed a major league-leading 10 home runs and 64 total bases this season. … Of the six hits by Ankiel this season, four have gone for home runs.
