Cardinals 6, Cubs 1: Jon Jay homered and drove in four runs and Adam Wainwright struck out 11 over seven strong innings as visiting St. Louis claimed the rubber match of the series.

Jay sparked a three-run second inning with an RBI double and added a three-run blast in the seventh to do most of the damage for St. Louis. Matt Carpenter added a two-run single as the Cardinals moved within one game of National League Central-leading Pittsburgh and stayed 1 1/2 games ahead of Cincinnati for the top NL wild-card spot.

Wainwright (14-7) snapped a streak of four straight starts without a win, holding the Cubs to one run on five hits. The right-hander had been winless in his previous six starts against Chicago.

Edwin Jackson (7-13) allowed three runs - one earned - on six hits in as many innings. He was hampered by four walks and a two-base error by rookie center fielder Junior Lake, who dropped Kolten Wong's fly ball in the second, leading to a pair of unearned runs.

Lake had three hits - including an RBI double - for the Cubs, who were 0-for-6 with runners in scoring position.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Cardinals C Yadier Molina went 2-for-5 and is hitting .432 in 12 games against Chicago this season. … Cubs SS Starlin Castro snapped an 0-for-16 skid with a single in the third. … St. Louis concludes its six-game road trip with a three-game series at Milwaukee starting Monday. The Cubs wrap up their 10-game homestand with four games against Washington.
