Red Sox 13, Yankees 9: Jonny Gomes went 3-for-4 with a home run and four RBIs as visiting Boston took its third straight from rival New York.

Mike Napoli homered twice, Xander Bogaerts added a two-run blast among three RBIs and Shane Victorino drove in a run and scored twice as the Red Sox clinched the four-game series and pushed their lead over the Tampa Bay Rays in the American League East to 8 1/2 games. John Lackey (9-12) notched the win despite allowing seven runs in 5 2/3 innings.

David Huff (2-1) was knocked around for nine runs on eight hits over 3 1/3 frames in his first start for the Yankees, who remained 2 1/2 games behind the Rays in the race for the second AL wild card. Brett Gardner drove in two runs and scored three times as New York dropped to 5-10 against Boston in 2013.

Napoli took Huff out to left field with one on in the second inning to give the Red Sox a quick lead and Gomes made it a 5-1 cushion with a three-run shot to left in the third. The Yankees got back a run in the bottom of the third, but Boston exploded in the fourth for five runs, including RBI doubles from Ryan Lavarnway and Victorino.

The Red Sox went up 12-3 on Bogaerts’ first career home run in the fifth before New York started to make things interesting with a four-run sixth. Mark Reynolds doubled in two more in the eighth, but Napoli hit a solo shot in the ninth to provide more breathing room.

GAME NOTEBOOK: This is the first time Boston and New York have played a series in which each team scored eight or more runs in each of three straight games, according to the Elias Sports Bureau. The Red Sox are the first visiting team to score 12 or more runs in consecutive games during the same series against the Yankees since the 1907 Washington Senators. … New York SS Derek Jeter was removed from the game in the sixth inning due to an issue in the area of his surgically repaired left ankle. … Boston CF Jacoby Ellsbury (foot) underwent an MRI in Boston on Saturday morning and is heading to Denver to see a specialist for a second opinion as they try to determine if he has a fracture or a bone bruise. He has missed two straight games and is out indefinitely.
