Diamondbacks 6, Rays 1: Cody Ross hit a three-run homer and Eric Chavez had a pair of RBI doubles as host Arizona rolled to a win in the opener of a two-game interleague series.
Wade Miley (9-8) yielded a run and five hits in seven strong innings for the Diamondbacks, who moved to within five games of first-place Los Angeles in the National League West. Tampa Bay, which split a pair against Arizona at home last week, fell 1 1/2 games behind Boston in the American League East.
The Rays took a 1-0 lead on Evan Longoria's 22nd home run in the fourth inning, but Paul Goldschmidt walked to begin the bottom half and Chavez drove him in with a double to right. After a walk to Aaron Hill, Ross took Rays starter Jeremy Hellickson deep for his third homer in eight games to make it 4-1.
Chavez followed another Goldschmidt walk with his second run-scoring double in the fifth and Martin Prado added one of his own in the seventh to push the advantage to five runs, more than enough for Miley and two relievers to prevent the Diamondbacks from falling to .500 for the first time since they were 1-1.
Hellickson (10-5) was charged with five runs in 4 2/3 innings while tying a season low with one strikeout. He gave up nine runs and 12 hits in nine innings over two starts against Arizona in the last week.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Rays CF Desmond Jennings (finger) was placed on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to Aug. 4. OF Jason Bourgeois was selected from Triple-A Durham to fill the roster spot. ... Hellickson recorded his first career hit with a single in the fifth. ... Ross is 36-for-92 with seven home runs and 24 RBIs in his last 23 interleague games.
