Royals 3, Orioles 2: Bruce Chen worked six strong innings to pick up his first win in more than two months as Kansas City evened the series with visiting Baltimore.
Chen (4-0) has spent most of the season in the bullpen but has yielded a total of one run and four hits in two starts since moving back into the rotation before the All-Star break. Greg Holland allowed a single and an RBI triple to Adam Jones to begin the ninth but stuck out major-league home run leader Chris Davis and got two straight groundouts to hold the lead and earn his 25th save.
Manny Machado homered but Jason Hammel (7-7) allowed three runs on 10 hits in six innings as the Orioles had a five-game winning streak come to an end.
Alex Gordon came in to score on a bases-loaded double play in the first and Chris Getz delivered an RBI single in the second to make it 2-0. Machado’s eighth homer in the third cut it back to a one-run deficit, but Mike Moustakas stretched it back out with an RBI double in the bottom of the frame.
Moustakas, Eric Hosmer and Alcides Escobar each recorded two hits for the Royals, who won for the third time in their last 10 games.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Baltimore acquired veteran RHP Francisco Rodriguez from the Milwaukee Brewers in exchange for minor-league INF Nick Delmonico. … Royals RHP Wade Davis has lost his last four starts, including a stint of 2 2/3 innings in Monday’s series opener, but will remain in the rotation according to manager Ned Yost. … The Orioles dipped 3 1/2 games behind the first-place Boston Red Sox in the American League East.
