Diamondbacks 4, Padres 2: Chris Young hit a two-run homer in the top of the 11th inning off Micah Owings and Arizona improved to 4-0 for the first time in team history.
Owings (0-1) hit Gerardo Parra with a pitch to begin the inning before Young lined his first pitch over the left field wall. Craig Breslow (1-0) pitched a scoreless 10th inning for the win, and J.J. Putz worked around a Yonder Alonso single in the bottom of the 11th for his third save.
San Diego, which was 4-12 last season in extra innings, has lost both of its extra-inning games this season.
After allowing a two-run Paul Goldschmidt double in the top of the first inning, Padres starter Edinson Volquez settled down and finished with eight strikeouts over seven innings.
Trailing 2-1 in the seventh, the Padres tied the game when Jason Bartlett’s single scored Orlando Hudson, who led off the inning with a triple off Brad Ziegler.
Trevor Cahill threw 54 balls and 50 strikes and walked six over six innings in his first start for Arizona. giving up one run on two hits.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Arizona outfielder Justin Upton didn’t start the game because of a sore left thumb, but he entered as a defensive replacement in the 11th inning …Cahill became the first pitcher since the start of the 2009 season with at least five walks and no hits allowed in the first two innings of a start…Padres manager Bud Black indicated that pitcher Dustin Moseley could be out an extended period with an injured right shoulder.
