Yankees 4, Red Sox 3 (12): Raul Ibanez tied it in the bottom of the ninth with a two-run homer and singled in the winning run in the 12th as host New York maintained its lead in the American League East.
Andrew Miller (3-2) issued back-to-back walks to Francisco Cervelli and Curtis Granderson with two outs in the 12th before Ibanez ripped an opposite-field single through the left side for the walk-off run. The victory kept the Yankees one game clear of the Baltimore Orioles, who won earlier in the night.
Andrew Bailey came on with a 3-1 lead to close it in the ninth for the Red Sox and surrendered a leadoff single to Granderson before Ibanez entered as a pinch hitter and lined a 1-2 fastball into the stands in right to knot the game at 3-3.
Dustin Pedroia, who sat out Monday’s opener with a broken finger, decided to play through the pain and doubled in a run in the first to spark a two-run rally. James Loney’s solo home run off Rafael Soriano in the top of the ninth made it a 3-1 gap for Boston.
Derek Lowe (9-11) allowed a pair of hits in two scoreless innings to earn the win in relief for the Yankees.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Should the Yankees and Orioles be tied after Wednesday, they will have to play a one-game playoff on Thursday to decide the division winner. … New York LHP Manny Banuelos, 21, who was the team’s top prospect entering the season, will undergo Tommy john surgery and is expected to miss all of 2013. … Boston RHP Daisuke Matsuzaka is scheduled to make his final appearance for the Red Sox on Wednesday. He is a free agent in the offseason and is not expected to be brought back after several injury-marred campaigns.
