Ryan Perry (1-0) worked a scoreless frame to grab the win.
Detroit held a 2-1 lead after the first inning, when Cabrera came up with a runner on third and belted a 96-mph fastball on the inside corner into the left field seats for his 27th homer.
Baltimore came back to regain the lead with a pair of runs in the third but the Tigers knotted it again at 3-3 when Ramon Santiago singled off Alfredo Simon, scoring Jhonny Peralta.
