Trelun Banks scored 19 points and Adrian Rodgers scored on a putback with 13 seconds left to give fourth-seeded Southern to a 54-53 victory over third-seeded Jackson State in the championship game of the Southwestern Athletic Conference Tournament on Saturday at the Toyota Center in Houston, Texas.
Junior forward Shawn Prudhomme had 10 points for Southern (22-12) and senior guard Adrian Rodgers added seven points and 11 rebounds.
Senior guard Raeford Worsham had 17 points and 12 rebounds for Jackson State (19-15) and sophomore guard Paris Collins collected 11 points and seven rebounds.
Southern started the game with a 7-0 run and went up 19-11 on a layup by sophomore guard Chris Thomas. Jackson State outscored the Jaguars 11-5 over the last 5:30, cutting their lead to 24-22 at the break.
The Tigers tied the game early in the second half and went up 28-27 on a jumper by junior guard Chace Franklin, but the Jaguars quickly reclaimed the lead.
Southern went ahead 36-28 on a jumper by senior guard Christopher Hyder, but Jackson State staged a 9-0 run to regain the lead. The Tigers led 48-42 with five minutes to go, but the Jaguars rallied Rodgers' basket completed the comeback.
