BERKELEY, Calif. -- California freshman Ivan Raab spent much of Friday's victory over Colorado on the bench with foul trouble, and when he had just two points in the first half against No. 21 Utah on Sunday, it seemed like another disappointing performance was in store.
But Raab scored 17 second-half points, including 11 during a span of 5:12 late in the game, to lead Cal to a 71-58 victory over the Utes.
Raab finished with a career-high 19 points and 10 rebounds, and he asserted himself when it was needed most. His 11-point surge helped the Bears increase a four-point lead to eight with 1:34 remaining.
"When he's like that, we tell him to go ahead and go to your bag of tricks," said Cal guard Jordan Mathews, who scored 12 of his 14 points in the second half. "When he's bumping like that, you got to give it to him every time."
Utah (11-4, 0-2 Pac-12) dropped both games in its trip to the Bay Area to open Pac-12 play, while Cal is 12-3, 2-0.
"One through five, they have a solid team, probably as good as any in the Pac-12 on a talent level," Utah coach Larry Krystkowiak said of Cal.
Sunday's game was the Utes' third contest this season played on their opponent's home court. Utah lost the previous two, falling by 17 points at Wichita State on Dec. 12 and dropping Friday's game at Stanford 70-68 in overtime. And now a 13-point loss to Cal.
Utah center Jakob Poeltl had 19 points and 10 rebounds and guard Brandon Taylor added 15 points for the Utes.
"We really played with effort," Krystkowiak said. "We just didn't play smart enough."
The Bears limited Utah to 38.5 percent shooting, including 29.6 percent in the first half. It was the second straight game Cal held its opponent under 40 percent from the field.
"It was one of those grinder games," Cal coach Cuonzo Martin said. "These are the kind of games I like."
The Bears led by as many as 11 points in the first half and held a nine-point advantage with 12:42 remaining in the second half when Cal guard Stephen Domingo hit a three-pointer from the corner.
Rabb pushed the margin to 10 points with a free throw at the 11:57 mark, but a 3-pointer by Taylor and a bucket by forward Chris Reyes closed the gap to five.
A dunk by Poeltl cut the Cal lead to 49-46 with 7:57 to go, but Mathews nailed his second 3-pointer of the half to make it a six-point game.
Mathews made his third trey with 5:31 left to expand the Bears' lead to 10 points.
The lead grew to 11 on a Rabb jumper, and the Bears coasted home from there.
"I was definitely more aggressive in that stretch," Raab said, "but it was more my teammates getting me the ball because they saw something in my eye."
"When he gets to the point where he wants the ball; every time down, he's going to be tough," Martin said.
Utah forward Kyle Kuzma, the team's third-leading scorer at 12.1 points per game before Sunday, left the game with 16:08 left in the second half after landing on his back on a fall to the floor. He did not return and finished with two points.
Cal shot just 36.7 percent from the field in the first half, but that was good enough to give the Bears a 26-22 lead at the break.
Poeltl did not score in the first 13 minutes, but still wound up as the high scorer in the first half with eight points to go along with eight rebounds.
