Virginia Tech 64, The Citadel 61: Adam Smith scored 14 of his 16 points in the second half and the host Hokies survived blowing a nine-point lead to rally past the Bulldogs.
Virginia Tech (6-4) prevailed despite shooting 3-of-16 from 3-point range and 15-of-25 from the free-throw line. Devin Wilson scored 10 points, his driving layup with 1:35 to play snapping a tie at 58 to put the Hokies ahead to stay, and Joey van Zegeren added 10 points.
Ashton Moore shot 7-of-15 from 3-point range, finishing with a season-high 27 points to pace The Citadel (4-6). The Bulldogs finished 13-of-34 from beyond the arc, and had a chance to tie after Justin Bibbs made 1-of-2 free throws with 6.8 seconds left, but Moore’s last-second 3-pointer missed the mark.
Smith scored the first eight points of the second half, sparking a 20-6 burst as the Hokies built a 42-33 advantage before The Citadel scored 21 of the next 29 points, Moore’s jumper with 5:45 to play pushing the Bulldogs ahead 54-50. Wilson scored on a drive in the lane for the go-ahead points and the Hokies led by five with 17 seconds left before C.J. Bray’s 3-pointer cut the deficit to 63-61 with eight seconds left.
Two Moore 3-pointers and a Jake Wright 3-pointer comprised a 9-2 run to put the Bulldogs ahead 20-14 with 9:16 left in the first half. The two teams combined to shoot 1-of-9 from the field in the final 5:10 before intermission, Bray’s 3-pointer with 2:40 to play sending The Citadel into halftime ahead 27-22.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Moore’s previous career high of six 3-point field goals came Nov. 19 against Toccoa Falls. … The Bulldogs hit only 9-of-25 attempts from the field in the first half, but knocked down 7-of-12 shots from 3-point range; Virginia Tech went 1-of-9 from 3-point range in the opening half and was a dreadful 1-of-6 from the free-throw line. … The Citadel’s last victory against ACC competition came against Clemson on Jan. 6, 1979.
