No. 6 Kansas 94, No. 4 Duke 83: Perry Ellis collected 24 points and nine rebounds and Andrew Wiggins scored 16 of his 22 points in the second half as the Jayhawks defeated the Blue Devils in the Champions Classic in Chicago.
Wiggins added a game-high 10 rebounds and took control in the final minutes, scoring back-to-back baskets to give the Jayhawks an 87-81 lead with 1:17 remaining. Wayne Selden and Frank Mason added 15 points apiece for Kansas (2-0), which shot 56.1 percent and outrebounded the Jayhawks 39-24.
Wiggins’ strong finish overshadowed a stellar effort by fellow freshman Jabari Parker, who led Duke (1-1) with 27 points, nine rebounds and two steals before fouling out with 1:17 remaining. Amile Jefferson added 17 points on 7-of-8 shooting.
Parker wowed the crowd in his native Chicago with an impressive all-around game and scored 19 points in the first half to give Duke a 42-40 lead at the break. Neither team led by more than six points until Kansas moved ahead 88-81 on Naadir Thorpe’s free throw with 1:03 to play.
Quinn Cook scored on the Blue Devils’ next possession, but Kansas sealed the victory with six straight free throws.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Kansas earned its first win in the Champions Classic after losing to Kentucky in 2011 and Michigan State last year. … Parker became the first Duke freshman to score at least 20 points in his first two games since Luol Deng in 2003. … The Blue Devils shot 16-of-28 from the foul line, while Kansas was 27-of-35.
