No. 12 Arizona 72, Texas-El Paso 51: Mark Lyons scored 17 points and connected on three first-half 3-pointers as the host Wildcats routed the Miners.
Solomon Hill added 10 points and Arizona (2-0) owned a dominating 35-14 rebounding edge while cruising past Texas-El Paso in the first meeting in 17 years.
Chris Washburn and older brother Julian Washburn scored 11 points apiece for UTEP (1-1). The Miners have lost 16 of their last 17 games against ranked foes.
Arizona led 35-22 at halftime and increased its lead to 17 points on a basket by Angelo Chol with 13:04 remaining. UTEP responded with a 14-5 run – including two 3-pointers by C.J. Cooper – to pull within 55-47 with 8:14 left.
A short time later, the Wildcats rolled off 13 straight points with Jordin Mayes feeding Chol for a dunk to give Arizona a 70-49 advantage.
GAME NOTEBOOK: The Miners dropped to 6-43 all-time on the road against ranked teams. … The Wildcats were 8-of-13 from 3-point range in the first half and finished 9-for-18. … UTEP center John Bohannon fouled out without scoring in 21 minutes. He averaged 11.5 points last season.
