Tanner Smith scored 10 of his career-high 26 points in overtime as Clemson rallied from a miserable first half to defeat Southern Illinois 83-75 on Friday in a consolation game at the Diamond Head Classic in Honolulu.
Rod Hall added 18 points for the Tigers (7-5), who won the first overtime game in the three-year history of this event.
Clemson, which went without a field goal for more than 12 minutes in its opening-round loss to Texas-El Paso on Thursday, outdid itself against Southern Illinois (3-7) as it went without a field goal for the final 13:35 of the first half, allowing the Salukis to turn an eight-point deficit into a 31-24 advantage at the break.
The field-goal drought mercifully ended 63 seconds into the second half on a 3-pointer by Hall after 16 consecutive missed shots.
Despite the shooting woes, Clemson managed to take a 50-47 lead midway through the second half, but a number of defensive lapses led to three dunks and a layup as the Salukis rolled off 10 unanswered points.
However, the Tigers rallied to knot it at 62 on a three-point play by Hall with less than four seconds remaining to send the game into overtime.
In the extra period, Clemson hit 16-of-18 from the foul line and Smith scored eight points during a 10-2 run.
Mamadou Seck rebounded from a foul-plagued performance in Thursday’s blowout loss to Kansas State with 18 points for Southern Illinois.
