Brockeith Pane scored 16 points and No. 17 Utah State survived a scare to defeat San Jose State 58-54 on Friday in Las Vegas to advance to the Western Athletic Conference tournament final.
Tai Wesley added 14 points and 12 rebounds for the top-seeded Aggies (29-3), who will face Boise State in Saturday’s final.
Adrian Oliver scored 16 points for San Jose State (17-15) but missed a go-ahead 3-point attempt with seven seconds left. Keith Shamburger added 11 points for San Jose State.
The eighth-seeded Spartans rallied from an eight-point second-half deficit to take a 49-48 lead on Matt Ballard’s tip-in with 7:19 to play.
Utah State took the lead for good at 52-51 on Pane’s jumper with 5:14 remaining and boosted the lead to five points on Wesley’s layup with 2:41 left.
San Jose State pulled within 56-54 on Oliver’s layup with 56.1 seconds to go. Wesley missed the front end of a 1-and-1 with 29 seconds left prior to Oliver’s missed 3-point attempt. Wesley hit two free throws with five seconds remaining to seal the game.
Nate Bendall had 12 rebounds for Utah State.
