Jonathan Schoop homered and drove in all four runs and five pitchers combined on a three-hit shutout as the host Detroit Tigers salvaged a doubleheader split with a 4-0 victory over the Minnesota Twins on Tuesday night.
Minnesota won the opener 8-2 as Gary Sanchez and Max Kepler drove in three runs apiece.
Joey Wentz, making his second major league start, held the Twins scoreless on one hit through four-plus innings. A left shoulder strain forced Wentz to exit while pitching to the first batter of the fifth inning.
Wily Peralta (2-0) replaced Wentz and tossed two scoreless innings to collect the victory. Andrew Chafin, Jason Foley and Michael Fulmer each pitched an inning of relief to complete the shutout.
Byron Buxton, Trevor Larnach and Jermaine Palacios had the only hits for the Twins. Minnesota starter Cole Sands (0-1) gave up all four runs and five hits in four innings during his first major league start. He walked four and struck out four.
Minnesota's Juan Minaya pitched two innings of hitless relief, including two strikeouts.
The Tigers grabbed a 2-0 lead in the first inning. Willi Castro led off with a single and stole second. On the seventh pitch of his at-bat, Schoop blasted a curveball over the left field wall for his fifth homer.
Detroit made it 4-0 in the second. Jeimer Candelario led off with a walk and advanced on Daz Cameron's single. Tucker Barnhart's groundout advanced both runners. After a strikeout, Schoop bounced a single to shallow right, and both runners scored.
The Tigers had a chance to add more runs in the inning, as Harold Castro followed with a double, moving Schoop to third. Javier Baez then hit a line drive, but right fielder Larnach made a diving catch to rob him of an extra-base hit.
Larnach and Ryan Jeffers walked in the fifth, but a fielder's-choice grounder allowed Peralta to escape unscathed.
Larnach hit a one-out double in the seventh before Chafin induced a pair of groundouts to keep the Twins off the scoreboard.
Fulmer struck out two of the three batters he faced in the ninth.
