Tarik Skubal, who went to nearby Seattle University, pitched five solid innings as the Detroit Tigers defeated the host Mariners 6-2 Wednesday night.
Harold Castro had three hits and drove in three runs for the Tigers, who swept the three-game series.
Skubal (1-6), a left-hander who had his former college coach and some old Redhawks teammates in the stands, allowed two runs on four hits with two walks and a career-high nine strikeouts.
Right-hander Logan Gilbert (0-2), Seattle's top pitching prospect, lasted just 2 2/3 innings in his second major league start. He allowed three runs on four hits, with two walks and two strikeouts.
Gilbert retired the side in order on just nine pitches in the first inning, but threw 30 pitches as the Tigers tied the score at 2-2 in the second and 35 more as Detroit took the lead in the third.
Seattle's Kyle Seager hit a two-run homer in the first inning. It was Seager's 84th career home run at T-Mobile Park, breaking a tie with Nelson Cruz and Raul Ibanez for the ballpark record.
The Tigers battled right back.
Jonathan Schoop walked leading off the second and Nomar Mazara lined a single to right. Eric Haase then grounded a run-scoring single into left. Mazara advanced to third on a deep fly to center and scored on Wilson Ramos' groundout.
Detroit took the lead in the third after Robbie Grossman led off with a double to right. Schoop walked with two outs and Mazara grounded a run-scoring single to left to make it 3-2 and end Gilbert's night.
The Tigers added two runs in the fourth off right-hander Will Vest. After a walk, wild pitch and a hit batter, Grossman singled to right to load the bases. Castro lined a two-run single to center to make it 5-2.
Skubal ran into a bit of trouble in the fifth as he tried to qualify for the victory. He issued a leadoff walk and later a one-out single to rookie Jarred Kelenic. But Skubal struck out Mitch Haniger and Kyle Lewis to end the inning and eclipse his previous high in strikeouts.
Castro's single in the ninth capped the scoring.
