Tyler Glasnow pitched effectively into the seventh inning as the Tampa Bay Rays scored early off Chris Sale and recorded a 5-2 victory over the host Boston Red Sox on Sunday afternoon.

Glasnow (5-0) allowed two runs on six hits in 6 2/3 innings and joined Seattle's Marco Gonzales as the second five-game winner in the majors. The 25-year-old right-hander struck out nine, walked one and threw 102 pitches while his fastball averaged 96.1 mph.

He cruised through the first five innings before encountering some trouble in the sixth and seventh.

Glasnow had runners at second and third in the sixth inning after Christian Vazquez reached on an infield single and Mookie Betts doubled off the Green Monster in left field. Glasnow allowed a sacrifice fly to Mitch Moreland and escaped by fanning Xander Bogaerts on a 96 mph fastball.

In the seventh, Glasnow gave up a one-out, 441-foot homer to rookie Michael Chavis and exited after allowing a double to Jackie Bradley Jr. Emilio Pagan, who closed out Saturday's 2-1 win, finished the inning by retiring Vazquez.

Jose Alvarado pitched a perfect eighth and Diego Castillo tossed a scoreless ninth to convert his third save.

Daniel Robertson hit a two-run homer in the first inning and Yandy Diaz had a two-run triple in the second as the Rays completed the sweep of the rain-shortened two-game series after getting swept last weekend at home by Boston.

Sale (0-5) completed seven innings for the first time since July 11, allowing four runs (two earned) and four hits. Sale struck out eight, his fastball averaged 91.6 mph and he reached 94 a few times.

Sale threw 48 pitches over the first two innings and 111 pitches overall, his most since May 22. He also dropped to 0-5 for the first time in his career and became the first pitcher in the majors to reach five losses.

The Rays went ahead three batters into the game. After Diaz opened the game with a double, Robertson slugged Sale's first-pitch fastball over the Green Monster.

Tampa Bay capitalized on a fielding error by third baseman Rafael Devers to take a 4-0 lead. Two batters after Devers misplayed a grounder by Willy Adames, Diaz lifted a fastball to deep center just out of the reach of Bradley's leaping attempt for the triple.

Tampa Bay took a 5-2 lead in the ninth when Avisail Garcia doubled and scored on a throwing error by Chavis, who attempted to complete a double play on Guillermo Heredia.
