Phillies 5, Padres 2: Cole Hamels struck out nine in seven innings and Ben Revere recorded two hits and two RBIs as visiting Philadelphia knocked off San Diego.
Freddy Galvis also drove in a pair of runs and Darin Ruf notched two hits and scored twice for the Phillies, who snapped their three-game slide. Hamels (9-7) scattered seven hits while allowing one run and walking one en route to the 21st straight start in which he yielded three or fewer earned runs.
Cameron Maybin recorded two hits and an RBI while Tommy Medica added two hits and scored as the Padres dropped to 2-1 on their final homestand of the season. Eric Stults (7-17) was reached for four runs on six hits in 4 1/3 innings to match Philadelphia right-hander A.J. Burnett for the major-league lead in losses.
Medica led off the fourth with a single, stole second and scored on Maybin’s base hit to give San Diego a quick lead. The Phillies bounced right back in the next inning, loading the bases on three straight singles before Galvis pushed a base hit into center to plate two.
Revere’s ground-rule double that got stuck under the tarp in left drove in two more in the fifth and ended Stults’ night. Ruf doubled off Joe Wieland leading off the sixth and moved up on a single before Carlos Ruiz’s sacrifice fly to center made it a four-run gap.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Veteran umpire Joe West was suspended one game by Major League Baseball for grabbing the shirt of Phillies RHP Jonathan Papelbon on Sunday. … Padres RF Seth Smith (hamstring) missed his second straight game and is day-to-day. … San Diego 3B Yangervis Solarte added two hits for his fourth multi-hit effort in the last six contests.
