Cardinals 4, Mets 2: Daniel Descalso scored the go-ahead run in the seventh inning and rookie right-hander Shelby Miller was strong again as host St. Louis won its third straight over New York.

Miller had his streak of 29 straight batters retired come to an end when David Wright singled with two outs in the first, but managed to extend his scoreless innings streak to 14 2/3 by scattering four hits over 5 2/3 frames. Seth Maness (3-0) gave up two runs but earned the win in relief for the Cardinals, who will go for the four-game sweep Thursday.

The Mets lifted Shaun Marcum (0-4) with one out in the seventh and runners at the corners, and left-hander Scott Rice unleashed a wild pitch that allowed Descalso to coast across with the go-ahead run. Yadier Molina added a pinch-hit RBI single in the eighth and Edward Mujica tossed a perfect ninth for his 11th save.

The Cardinals took the lead in the fourth when Jon Jay sent a two-out RBI double into the gap in right-center and Tony Cruz followed with a run-scoring single to left. New York got those runs back in the seventh when newcomer Rick Ankiel followed John Buck’s one-out single with a towering homer to center.

Ankiel had two hits and Marcum singled twice while allowing three runs (two earned) and five hits in 6 2/3 innings.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Wright struck out three times and committed an error in the fourth that allowed Jay to advance to third and kept the Cardinals' rally alive. … New York top prospect RHP Zack Wheeler got a cortisone shot in the AC joint of his right shoulder. He is only expected to skip one start. … St. Louis’ top four hitters combined to go 1-for-14.
