Pirates 3, Brewers 1: Neil Walker delivered a two-run single and Wandy Rodriguez pitched seven strong innings as host Pittsburgh downed Milwaukee for the second consecutive night.
Rodriguez (4-2) held the Milwaukee offense to one run on six hits, his only blemish coming on Rickie Weeks’ solo homer with one out in the seventh. Jason Grilli pitched a perfect ninth for his National League-leading 16th save as the Pirates won for the fifth time in six games.
Pittsburgh broke a scoreless tie in the sixth with a pair of runs off Milwaukee starter Yovani Gallardo (3-3). Starling Marte doubled to lead off the inning, Andrew McCutchen walked and Walker brought them home with a single to center.
Gallardo allowed three hits in six innings, walking four while striking out five. Milwaukee dropped to 1-5 on its 10-game road trip and slipped 9 1/2 games behind St. Louis in the NL Central.
McCutchen, who won Tuesday’s game on a walkoff homer in the 12th inning, stole two bases and scored Pittsburgh’s third run on Weeks’ throwing error in the eighth. The Pirates had just one hit through five innings and finished with four.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Walker’s single to center snapped a 0-for-23 Pittsburgh skid with runners in scoring position in the series. … The Brewers dropped to 6-11 on the road. Only the Mets and Astros have fewer road victories. … Pittsburgh INF John McDonald, who strained his lower back in extra innings Tuesday, was placed on the 15-day disabled list.
