Anthony Cirelli, Tyler Johnson, Victor Hedman, Brayden Point and Mikhail Sergachev also scored for the Eastern Conference-leading Lightning, who didn't travel to New York until Thursday morning due to the snowstorm that hammered the Northeast on Wednesday.
With the win, Tampa Bay extended is Atlantic Division lead over the idle Boston Bruins to six points, though Boston has two games at hand.
Goalie Andrei Vasilevskiy made 35 saves.
Ryan Pulock, Anders Lee and Anthony Beauvillier each scored twice for the Islanders, who have lost 12 of 14 (2-8-4). New York trailed 7-3 after two before pulling within one goal less than five minutes into the third period.
Goalie Christopher Gibson was chased after giving up six goals on 24 shots before Jaroslav Halak made 11 saves on 12 shots.
Cirelli and Johnson scored in a 26-second span in the first three minutes of the first period. Pulock scored the first of his two power play goals with 9:36 left, but Hedman gave the Lightning a two-goal lead again by scoring to cap an end-to-end rush by Tampa Bay with 5:43 remaining.
Point put the Lightning up 4-1 just 2:43 into the second on a short-handed tally before the Islanders mounted a surge with goals by Pulock and Lee over the next 2:32. But Tampa Bay responded with two goals -- by Miller and Sergachev -- in the next 6:07 to go up 6-3 and chase Gibson.
Miller scored against Halak with 1:40 left in the period. The Islanders made another push in the first 4:36 of the third, when Lee scored his second goal and Beauvillier scored twice in a 75-second span, the second on a redirect of a Johnny Boychuk slapshot, to close the gap to 7-6.
But New York couldn't tie the game despite outshooting Tampa Bay 14-10 in the final 20 minutes.
