Canucks 3, Oilers 2 (OT): Defenseman Chris Tanev scored his first career goal 4:40 into overtime as visiting Vancouver evened its season series against Edmonton.
Tanev took a pass from captain Henrik Sedin and fired a wrist shot from the high slot that beat Devan Dubnyk to the stick side. Daniel Sedin also assisted on Tanev’s goal, Jannik Hansen added a goal and an assist and defenseman Kevin Bieksa tied the game late in the third period while Roberto Luongo made 23 saves.
Ales Hemsky and Ryan Smyth scored for Edmonton, which squandered a 2-0 lead. Dubnyk, who stopped 27 shots in a 3-2 shootout victory over Vancouver on Jan. 20 for his first win of the season, made 37 saves Monday.
Hemsky opened the scoring on a power play late in the first period, collecting a bouncing puck in the slot and driving to the net before using a backhand deke to beat Luongo. Eight minutes into the second, Smyth made it 2-0 when his short-handed forechecking created a turnover and Anton Lander sent the puck back to him for a one-timer.
The Canucks outshot Edmonton 15-4 in the second period and Hansen cut the deficit in half less than five minutes after Smyth’s goal when he muscled his way out from behind the net and banked the puck off Dubnyk’s back. Bieksa one-timed a loose puck along the right-wing boards that snuck underneath Dubnyk’s right arm to tie the game with 2:17 left in regulation.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Daniel Sedin hooked Edmonton LW Taylor Hall on a breakaway 2:47 into overtime. Hall was awarded a penalty shot, but his wrister hit Luongo’s right pad. … Smyth's score was the Oilers' first short-handed goal this season, and the first allowed by Vancouver. ... Edmonton captain Shawn Horcoff, who missed the previous two games with a strained neck, left the contest after breaking a knuckle while blocking a shot. He is out indefinitely.
