Yanni Wetzell posted a double-double with 17 points and 16 rebounds, and No. 7 San Diego State rallied from a halftime deficit to down visiting Nevada 68-55 at Viejas Arena.
The Aztecs (19-0, 8-0 Mountain West) held Nevada to just 20 second-half points and went on a 17-0 run during a seven-minute span. The dominant stretch erased a 35-33 halftime deficit and moved San Diego State one win from matching the best start in program history.
Nevada (11-8, 4-3) built its first-half lead behind Jalen Harris, who scored 16 of his 19 points before intermission. The Wolf Pack were on pace to score 70 points, a milestone no San Diego State opponent has reached since Iowa on Nov. 29.
However, a field-goal drought of more than 11 minutes doomed Nevada to its worst scoring output since recording just 42 points against BYU on Dec. 10.
Jazz Johnson joined Harris in double figures scoring with 13 points. No other Wolf Pack player scored more than five.
In contrast, four San Diego State scorers finished with at least 11 points. Malachi Flynn finished with 14. Jordan Schakel had 12, and Matt Mitchell scored 11 points.
Flynn also dished seven assists, leading the Aztecs on a night in which 14 of their 23 made field goals were assisted.
San Diego State's offense struggled in stretches, shooting 23 of 60 from the floor. However, the Aztecs hit on 37 percent of their 3-point attempts, led by Schakel's 3 of 6 from beyond the arc, and were 12 of 15 at the free throw line.
San Diego State also turned 14 Nevada turnovers into 15 points.
The Aztecs are at home again Tuesday, hosting Wyoming with the opportunity to match the Kawhi Leonard-led 2010-11 team's record start. A win Tuesday would also mark the program's third-ever 20-game winning streak.
The 2013-14 Aztecs won 20 straight after opening the season 1-1. Both the 2010-11 and 2013-14 teams reached the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament and are the only squads in program history to advance that far in the postseason.
