Miami (Fla.) 73, Alabama 66: Davon Reed scored 15 points and pulled down eight rebounds as the host Hurricanes downed the Crimson Tide in the second round of the NIT.
Manu Lecomte added 15 of his team-high 17 points in the second half and Deandre Burnett had 13 off the bench for Miami (23-12), which won the battle of the boards 44-33. Junior center Tonye Jekiri produced nine points, including the first 3-pointer of his career, to go along with 12 rebounds for the second-seeded Hurricanes, who will play either Richmond or Arizona State in the quarterfinals.
Rodney Cooper led the way with 20 points while Levi Randolph produced 17 points and seven rebounds for sixth-seeded Alabama (19-15), which couldn't survive a 12-of-19 performance from the free-throw line. Retin Obasohan scored 11 points and Michael Kessens had 10 in a reserve role for the Crimson Tide.
Ivan Cruz Uceda connected from beyond the arc to put Miami on top 41-39 early in the second half and Burnett buried back-to-back 3-pointers as part of a decisive 17-2 burst to push the margin to double digits at 62-49. The Hurricanes coasted the rest of the way to beat Alabama for the first time despite leading scorer Sheldon McClellan being limited to two points.
Omar Sherman keyed a 12-1 run as Miami held Alabama without a field goal for over six minutes to take a 27-18 lead. Obasohan converted a three-point play and scored seven points as part of a 14-2 burst to end the first half to give the Crimson Tide a 34-30 advantage at intermission.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Miami went 9-of-23 from 3-point range while Alabama finished 6-of-27. … Hurricanes G Angel Rodriguez, who is the team's second-leading scorer at 12.2 points per game, was inactive due to a wrist injury. … Randolph had made 36 straight free throws before his streak came to an end with a miss late in the second half.
