TCU 67, Kansas State 65: Kyan Anderson had 16 points and six assists while Chris Washburn added 16 points and eight rebounds as the ninth-seeded Horned Frogs knocked off the eighth-seeded Wildcats in the opening round of the Big 12 tournament in Kansas City.
Trey Zeigler scored 15 points for TCU (18-14), which faces top-seeded Kansas in Thursday’s quarterfinals. Anderson made all four of the Horned Frogs’ 3-pointers while Karviar Shepherd contributed nine points and nine rebounds.
Thomas Gipson had 16 points and seven rebounds for Kansas State (15-17), which finished with a losing record for the first time since the 2002-03 campaign. Nino Williams had 13 points and 10 rebounds while Malek Harris and Wesley Iwundu scored 10 points apiece.
The Horned Frogs saw a double-digit lead trimmed to two early in the second half and Kansas State was within 47-44 just past the midway point before Anderson scored five points during a 7-0 run to make it a 10-point margin and Ziegler’s basket made it 58-46 with 6:36 to go. The Wildcats answered with a 12-3 burst to move within three with three minutes left and Williams’ three-point play moved them within 64-62 before two free throws by Zeigler made it a two-possession game with 32 seconds left and TCU prevailed.
Kansas State led 16-12 eight-plus minutes into the game before the Horned Frogs rolled off the next 10 points for a six-point lead. TCU’s advantage reached 10 on Shepherd’s jumper with 5:42 remaining and later was 33-21 on Ziegler’s dunk before the Wildcats scored the final six of the half to trail by six at the break.
GAME NOTEBOOK: The Wildcats were 18-of-24 from the free-throw line while TCU was 9-of-19. … The victory was the first in the Big 12 tourney for the Horned Frogs in three seasons in the conference. … Kansas State leading scorer Marcus Foster went scoreless and missed all five of his field-goal attempts.
