No. 14 Louisville 59, No. 2 Virginia 57: Mangok Mathiang scored with 2.7 seconds left and Montrezl Harrell had 20 points and 12 rebounds as the Cardinals handed the Cavaliers their first road loss of the season.
Quentin Snider scored 11 points and Terry Rozier collected 11 points, seven rebounds, four assists and three steals for Louisville (24-7, 12-6 ACC). The Cardinals trailed 57-56 on Malcolm Brogdon’s 3-pointer with nine seconds left before Mathiang scored his first points on a 17-foot jumper and the Cavaliers turned the ball over on their final possession.
Brogdon led Virginia (28-2, 16-2) with 17 points and six rebounds while Darion Atkins had 10 points and seven boards. Anthony Gill scored nine points and Mike Tobey grabbed six rebounds for the Cavaliers, who secured the top seed in next week’s conference tournament with Monday’s victory over Syracuse.
Louisville, which clinched the No. 4 seed and a double bye in the conference tournament with the victory, led by as many as 14 midway through the opening period and took a 30-25 advantage at the half after Virginia closed on a 12-6 run. Atkins threw down a dunk to cap a 12-2 run and give the Cavaliers their first lead at 37-36 with just under 15 minutes left.
Virginia scored eight straight points and tied the game at 52 on Evan Nolte’s 3-pointer with 4:02 left, but Louisville answered with four quick points before Brodgon pulled the Cavaliers within 56-54 with 1:02 left. Brogdon put Virginia ahead with a 3-pointer that silenced the Louisville crowd, but Mathiang scored on a designed play on the other end to end the Cavaliers’ nine-game winning streak.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Louisville shot 46.9 percent against a Virginia team that came in ranked first nationally in scoring defense at 50.3 points per game. … London Perrantes recorded seven points, four rebounds and five assists for Virginia, which defeated Louisville 52-47 on Feb. 7. … Louisville won on its Senior Day for the 13th time in the last 14 seasons.
