Seven-footers A.J. Hammons (15) and Isaac Hass (13) added a combined 28 points and 12 rebounds for Purdue (6-1), which beat North Carolina State for the first time in five meetings. Kendall Stephens chipped in nine points, Dakota Mathias had seven and Edwards led the team with nine rebounds.
Kyle Washington had a career-high 17 points and a team-leading nine rebounds off the bench for the Wolfpack (6-1), who were playing their first true road game of the season. Alabama transfer Trevor Lacey added 15 for the visitors, but they were outrebounded (37-31) for the first time all season.
Purdue took a 36-34 lead into the second half, and it led 62-56 with a little more than five minutes to go before the Wolfpack closed to within 64-61. Lacey, however, missed the front end of a 1-and-1 opportunity before Beejay Anya was stripped after pulling down the offensive rebound and Hammons made a pair of free throws for the final margin.
With Edwards scoring 13 points, Purdue controlled the first half inside, and the visitors’ last lead of the half came at 4-2. The Boilermakers led by as many as nine, and they finished the half with the two-point lead and a 19-14 rebound edge, including 9-4 on the offensive glass which resulted in a 16-5 second-chance points advantage.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Purdue has won six straight ACC/Big Ten Challenge games and is now 8-6 overall in the series . … N.C. State, meanwhile, has lost six of its last seven Challenge contests and is 6-9 overall. … Purdue played without reserve G Bryson Scott, who sat out with an ankle injury.
