North Carolina State 66, No. 11 Syracuse 63: T.J. Warren scored 28 points and Ralston Turner hit the go-ahead 3-pointer as the Wolfpack upset the Orange in the ACC quarterfinals in Greensboro, N.C.
Turner did not score in the first half but hit three 3-pointers after intermission for seventh seed North Carolina State (21-12), which moves into Saturday’s semifinals against third seed Duke. Warren, the ACC Player of the Year, shot 9-for-21 from the field and finished with eight rebounds.
Tyler Ennis scored 21 points and Jerami Grant added 19 points and 10 rebounds for second seed Syracuse (27-5), which shot 32.7 percent from the field in losing for the fifth time in seven games. Leading scorer C.J. Fair hit just 3-of-16 shots to finish with nine points, and the Orange missed six shots – including four 3-point attempts – trailing by three points in the final seconds.
Syracuse used a 12-2 run to grab a 59-57 lead on Fair’s free throw with 3:41 left, but Anthony Barber hit two free throws and Turner followed by banking home a 3-pointer to put the Wolfpack ahead 62-59 with 2:26 to play. Warren’s jumper from the left baseline made it 64-61 with 1:36 left, and after Michael Gbinije’s layup brought the Orange within one point, Warren’s two free throws with 26 seconds made it 66-63.
The Orange led by three points with five minutes left in the first half, but Tyler Lewis scored seven points – including two 3-pointers – down the stretch as the Wolfpack carried a 28-25 lead into intermission. North Carolina State used a 13-3 run to take a 10-point lead with 11 minutes to play, and Turner’s 3-pointer staked the Wolfpack to a 55-47 advantage with 7:31 remaining.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Both teams slogged through a miserable shooting first half, as North Carolina State hit just five of its first 19 shots from the field while Syracuse shot 7-for-27 in the opening period. … Fair came in averaging 16.9 points. … Ennis and Grant combined to shoot 11-for-25; the rest of the Orange were 7-for-30.
