No. 5 Wichita State 72, Bradley 50: Fred VanVleet scored 22 points as the Shockers cruised to a Missouri Valley Conference victory over the visiting Braves.
VanVleet also had seven rebounds, three assists and three steals while Darius Carter had 11 points for the Shockers (18-0, 5-0), who trailed for just 56 seconds early in the first half. Derail Green recorded eight points and three steals while Ron Baker added seven points and five rebounds.
Walt Lemon Jr. scored 12 points on 5-of-14 shooting for the Braves (6-12, 1-4), who have lost three straight and 10 of their last 11 games. Tyshon Pickett picked up 11 points, eight rebounds and three steals while Omari Grier added 10 points.
VanVleet was the dominant force on both ends of the court in the first half for the Shockers, who shook off a slow start to hold the Braves to just nine points over the final eight-plus minutes. After Grier hit a 3-pointer to bring Bradley to within one point at 15-14, Green followed eight straight points by VanVleet with eight of his own to key Wichita State's 25-9 run to close the first half.
The second half opened with the Shockers scoring the first seven points en route to a 24-point lead that eventually grew to 32 on more than one occasion before the Braves scored the final 10 points. Chadrack Lufile had six points and six rebounds for Wichita State, which plays Saturday at home against Indiana State.
GAME NOTEBOOK: VanVleet had 14 points, five rebounds and three steals in the first half for the Shockers, who were 5-of-11 from beyond the arc and 13-of-16 at the foul line in the opening 20 minutes. ... Wichita State leading scorer Cleanthony Early opened the game with a 3-pointer, but did not score again until there were eight minutes left in the second half and finished with six points. ... The Shockers finished 23-of-29 on free throws and won the rebounding battle 41-31.
