Cameron Woodyard scored six straight points in a late 10-2 run and Tim Frazier led all scorers with 26 points to lift Penn State over visiting Long Island 77-68 Wednesday.
The Nittany Lions (3-0) built a 72-64 lead on a 3-pointer by Billy Oliver with 3:13 to play and the pesky Blackbirds never got closer than six the rest of the way in the early-round contest of the 2011 Basketball Hall of Fame Tip-off Tournament.
Things get much tougher for the Nittany Lions when they play Kentucky as the tournament continues at the Mohegan Sun in Connecticut on Saturday.
The game was tied at 36 at the half and LIU (0-3), the overwhelming preseason favorite in the Northeast Conference, took a four-point lead late in the second half before Woodyard led the turnaround. The veteran Woodyard finished with a career-high 15 points.
Long Island (0-3) got 15 points from both Michael Culpo and Julian Boyd. Four players hit double figures for the Blackbirds which took the lead with aggressive inside play that resulted in 35 trips to the free-throw line. They hit 27 shots from the stripe but shot just 36 percent from the field.
