Royals 7, Giants 2: Omar Infante capped a five-run sixth inning with a two-run homer as host Kansas City defeated San Francisco to even the World Series at a game apiece.
Billy Butler delivered a tiebreaking single in the sixth and Salvador Perez smashed a two-run double into the left-center field gap before Infante smacked a homer to left off Giants reliever Hunter Strickland to make it 7-2. Butler had two hits and two RBIs, and Lorenzo Cain had two hits and scored twice as the Royals won a World Series game for the first time since 1985.
Kelvin Herrera (1-0) pitched 1 2/3 scoreless innings for Kansas City, which attempts to take the series lead Friday when the scene shifts to San Francisco for Game 3. Giants starter Jake Peavy (1-1) was charged with four runs and six hits in five-plus innings.
Peavy allowed the first two runners to reach in the sixth before being removed and Butler followed with the go-ahead single against Jean Machi. Strickland entered later in the inning and gave up Perez’s two-bagger to make it 5-2 before serving up Infante’s shot and exchanging words with Perez prior to being pulled by manager Bruce Bochy.
San Francisco’s Gregor Blanco led off the game with a homer to right against Kansas City starter Yordano Ventura before the Royals tied it in the bottom of the inning on Butler’s single against Peavy. Alcides Escobar stroked a run-scoring double in the second to put Kansas City ahead and the Giants' Brandon Belt delivered a one-out double in the fourth to tie it.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Giants 3B Pablo Sandoval has reached base in 25 consecutive postseason games, tied with Baltimore’s Boog Powell (1966-71) for the third-longest streak. … Ventura allowed two runs and eight hits in 5 1/3 innings. … Strickland has given up five homers in the postseason, matching the dubious record set by Milwaukee’s Chris Narveson in 2011, while RHP Tim Lincecum left with an apparent injury in the eighth.
