Tigers 8, White Sox 4: Kyle Ryan outdueled Chris Bassitt in their respective major-league debuts as visiting Detroit held off a late charge from Chicago to earn a split of the day-night doubleheader.
Ryan (1-0) scattered five hits and two walks over six innings while striking out one to help the Tigers pull into a first-place tie with the Kansas City Royals atop the American League Central. Ian Kinsler drove in three runs and Ezequiel Carrera added three hits and two runs scored for Detroit, which dropped the opener 6-3.
Bassitt (0-1) had a little more trouble getting acclimated to the majors, allowing five runs on seven hits and four walks as the White Sox fell for the 10th time in 12 games. Avisail Garcia delivered an RBI groundout to get Chicago on the board and Dayan Viciedo clubbed a three-run homer to right-center off Joba Chamberlain in the eighth to cut it to a one-run deficit before the Tigers tacked on three runs in the ninth.
Carrera led off the third with a double for the first hit off Bassitt and scored when Rajai Davis followed with a single to right-center. Davis stole second and came around on Kinsler’s single to make it a 2-0 gap.
The Tigers loaded the bases on two singles and a walk in the fourth in front of Kinsler, who sent a two-run single through the middle to double the lead. Miguel Cabrera’s groundout capped the three-run frame and J.D. Martinez chipped in a sacrifice fly in the ninth-inning rally to provide enough cushion for Detroit to survive a rocky performance from the bullpen.
GAME NOTEBOOK: White Sox 1B Jose Abreu reached base three times on a single and two walks, extending his hitting streak to 10 straight games. … Cabrera left the game in the fourth inning after aggravating his injured right ankle running down to first. … Chicago traded OF Alejandro De Aza to the Baltimore Orioles in exchange for minor-league RHPs Mark Blackmar and Miguel Chalas.
